The bench offers the strange experience of belonging to something you are not currently allowed to do.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Sitting on the bench is belonging without permission to act. You are inside the group, dressed for it, invested in the outcome, and unable to affect it, which is a peculiar and genuinely uncomfortable position. The difficulty comes from the combination rather than from either part alone.

A lot of life includes this: watching a family member struggle, waiting out a decision made elsewhere, being part of something you cannot influence. The useful move is usually to find the part that is actually yours, however small, and do that fully. Readiness is a real contribution even when it never gets called on, and it is easier to hold when you have named it as your job.
