The game called friendly can reveal competition neither player admits outside it.

REFLECTION
The word friendly does not remove the competition; it removes permission to acknowledge it. Both players want to win, both are more invested than they will admit, and the label makes that unspeakable, which is why these games occasionally curdle. What is denied has to go somewhere.
If you notice real intensity in a supposedly casual game, saying so lightly is usually enough. Admitting that you both care makes the whole thing easier and often more enjoyable. The version where everyone pretends indifference while playing hard is the one that produces the strange silences on the way home.
With whom are you more competitive than either of you admits?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
