A trophy’s shine says nothing about whether its owner still enjoys the activity that earned it.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

A trophy records a result and says nothing about whether the person still likes doing the thing. Plenty of people are decorated in activities that have become joyless, and the object on the shelf keeps testifying to an achievement that may have cost the pleasure that started it. Recognition and enjoyment can move in opposite directions.

So check occasionally whether you still want the activity or only the standing that comes with it. The question is uncomfortable and it is much better asked early. If the honest answer is that the enjoyment has gone, that is worth knowing before the accumulated recognition makes it feel impossible to stop.
