The person who can afford to avoid a risk may call the person who cannot careless.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Calling someone careless can be a way of not noticing what they could not afford. The person who can pay for the safer option, the better equipment, the time to do it properly, is in a poor position to judge the person who could not, and the judgement usually arrives as a comment about character. Risk tolerance is often a budget.

Before describing a choice as reckless, ask what the alternatives cost and whether they were available. This applies to housing, health, work, and transport. And when you have taken a risk out of necessity, the disapproval of people with more options is not an accurate assessment of your judgement.
