The alarm clock trains a daily habit of silencing something designed to command attention.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Every morning you practise ignoring something built to demand your attention. The alarm is designed to be impossible to overlook, and within weeks you can silence it in your sleep, which is a small daily demonstration of how quickly urgency can be trained out of anything.
That capacity works against you elsewhere. Notifications, deadlines, warnings, and the concerns of people close to you can all be habituated in the same way. It is worth occasionally asking what you have learned to silence automatically. Anything that has stopped registering was not necessarily solved; it may just have been practised into the background.
What signal do you silence every morning without thinking?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
