The instructions tucked inside an inherited object may be the last practical advice its owner gives you.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Objects come with knowledge attached. A folded slip explaining how to wind the clock or which way the latch turns is someone’s care converted into a note, the last thing they thought to tell you about the thing they were handing on. It is practical, which is exactly what makes it moving.

Keep those papers, and while you can, ask for more of them. Ask the people you love how the thing works, what the trick is, why it was done that way, and write it down while it is still an ordinary question. Then leave your own notes for whoever inherits what you use daily.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What practical knowledge did someone leave you along with their things?
