An effect can be real even when the explanation sold with it is wrong.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A thing can work for reasons other than the ones it advertises. The benefit is genuine, people are not imagining it, and the story attached to why it works may still be nonsense, which means you can be right about the effect and wrong about everything underneath it. Outcome and explanation come apart more often than we expect.

Separate the two before you accept or reject something. If the routine helps you, keep it, while staying free to discard the theory that came bundled with it. And when you recommend it, describe what happened rather than the mechanism you assume, since the effect is what you actually observed.
