A method can produce agreement because it finds truth or because everyone shares the same blind spot.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Consensus can come from convergence on truth or from convergence on a shared limitation. If everyone uses the same method, trained the same way, looking through the same instruments, they will agree beautifully about anything the method can see and agree just as beautifully about nothing where it is blind. Agreement is evidence, and it is weaker evidence than it feels.
When a group you belong to is unanimous, ask what you all share that could be producing that. Bring in someone with a different approach, not to be contrarian but because their errors will be different from yours. Disagreement between differently equipped people is far more informative than agreement among similar ones.
Where does everyone around you agree a little too easily?
