A good deed performed anonymously still has consequences for someone who did not choose to receive it.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Good intentions still land on someone who was not consulted. Help arrives with implications, a change in their circumstances, an obligation they did not ask for, an assumption about what they needed, and anonymity removes even the chance to decline or discuss it. Being on the receiving end of a decision made about you is its own experience, whether or not the decision was kind.

Where you can, ask before you act on someone’s behalf, even when asking makes the gesture less elegant. Where you cannot, choose the form of help that leaves them the most control over what happens next. The test is not how it feels to give but how much room it leaves them.
