Some achievements become less desirable when you meet the schedule behind them.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Results are advertised; the calendar behind them usually is not. Someone’s output looks enviable until you find out what a week of producing it actually contains, and how many ordinary things had to be given up to make room. At that point the question changes from whether you want the result to whether you want the life that generates it.

When you catch yourself envying an achievement, find out what the routine really looks like before setting it as a target. Ask the person how they spend a Tuesday. If the answer sounds unbearable to you, that is useful information rather than a failure of ambition.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose success would you stop envying after seeing their actual week?
