A flattering invitation still deserves a careful look at what it asks from you.

RESILIENCE
Being chosen is pleasant enough to interfere with arithmetic. When someone says they specifically wanted you, the natural response is to feel valued and answer before working out the hours, the travel, the money, or what it displaces. Flattery is not necessarily manipulation; it is simply a strong feeling that arrives before the details do. The invitation may be excellent, and it will still be excellent after you have read it properly.
When the next appealing offer arrives, say you are glad to be asked and will reply tomorrow. Then write down what it actually costs in time and attention. Decide from that page rather than from the moment.
When did flattery get you to agree before you read the terms?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
