A private difficulty should not become a public example merely because the lesson sounds useful.

LEADERSHIP
A story that would genuinely teach people is tempting to tell, and the usefulness of the lesson can make it feel almost owed. The person inside the story is not a case study, though, and being turned into one, even admiringly, takes away their say in how they are known. Value to an audience is not a claim on someone’s privacy. Most lessons survive perfectly well without a named body attached.
If the example is not yours, ask first, and accept a no without negotiating around it. Where you can, teach the point in general terms and keep the particulars to yourself.
Whose hardship have you used to illustrate a point?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
