Learn what a mistake looks like before deciding every imperfect attempt has failed.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Beginners often cannot tell a mistake from an ordinary rough patch, so anything imperfect reads as failure. That misreading ends more attempts than genuine incompetence ever does. Knowing what a real error looks like in a particular craft, and what merely looks wrong along the way, is among the first things worth learning. Most early work is supposed to look exactly like that.

Ask somebody experienced which stages simply look bad at first and which signs mean something is actually wrong. Find other people’s early attempts and compare yours to those rather than to finished work.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where do you call something a failure that is simply unfinished?
