A convincing story still needs a place where its claims can be checked.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Persuasiveness and accuracy are produced by different things. A well-shaped account, told confidently by someone likeable, satisfies the part of you that wants a coherent world and never touches the question of whether the parts are true. That is why the strongest stories deserve the most checking rather than the least.

When something lands as obviously right, find one specific claim inside it that could be verified, and go check that one thing. Notice where the account originally came from. Keep believing it if it holds up, and it may well hold up.
