Keep asking what someone wants to try, even after others begin asking only what they should avoid.

As a person becomes older or unwell, the questions around them narrow. Everyone means well, and the conversation gradually turns into a list of cautions: what to be careful of, what to stop, what is no longer sensible. Nobody decides to do this. It simply happens, and the person ends up being consulted about their limits far more often than about their wishes.
Ask what they would like to try, or see, or start again, and treat the answer as real. Some of it will be possible with a small adjustment. Being asked at all tends to matter as much as the answer.
