The game deserves effort that does not require contempt for the person across from you.

Competitive intensity gets tangled up with hostility, as though playing hard required thinking less of the person opposite. The two come apart easily, and the game works better once they do, since the opponent is the entire reason it is worth playing. Treating them as an obstacle drains the thing you both came for.
Play as hard as you like and keep the commentary out of it. Say the good shot was good, mean it, and take the win without needing the other person to feel small.
Where does competing bring out contempt you would rather not have?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
