A kind room does not make awkwardness contagious.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

When someone stumbles socially, the room decides what happens next. In some rooms the discomfort spreads: people look away, the silence lengthens, and one person’s small misstep becomes everyone’s problem, which the person feels for hours afterward. In other rooms someone simply carries on, and the moment dissolves. Nothing about the original mistake changed; only the response did.

Practice being the person who absorbs rather than amplifies. When a joke lands badly or a name comes out wrong, answer as though it were ordinary and keep the conversation moving. The whole repair takes about two seconds.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When someone stumbles socially near you, do you ease it or amplify it?
