You often cannot see the weight someone was carrying until it is set down. The sudden ease after a job ends, a schedule changes, or a difficult arrangement finally closes says more about the last two years than anything the person told you at the time. While it was happening they were managing, and managing looks like fine.

Treat someone’s visible relief after a change as information. Ask gently what the hard part was, now that it is over and safe to describe. And watch for the same signal in yourself: the thing you notice only when the pressure lifts was real the whole time.
