Give the answer at the level the person needs, not at the level that displays everything you know.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

There is a pull, when you know a subject, to answer the whole question rather than the one that was asked. The extra detail feels like thoroughness from the inside, but it usually serves the speaker: it demonstrates depth, and it protects against seeming simplistic. The person in front of you wanted to know what to do next, and now has to find it inside a lecture.

Ask yourself what this person will actually do with the answer, then say that first. Stop, and let them ask for more if they want it. Most people will, and you can go as deep as they like from there.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did you answer to look knowledgeable instead of to be understood?
