Let children see you enjoying something you are not trying to improve at.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Children learn what adults do with their spare attention. If everything you take up in front of them is measured, improved and reported on, they conclude that an activity has to justify itself with progress, and the things they are merely average at start to feel like wasted time. Watching someone enjoy an ordinary skill badly is a lesson too.

Do something in the house this week purely because you like it: sing, draw, play, cook something strange. Say out loud that you are not good at it and have no plans to improve. Let them see the pleasure survive the lack of talent.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What do you do purely for pleasure where others can see?
