The memory of making a photograph becomes part of how the subject feels when seeing it.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
A picture carries the half hour around it. If someone was hurried, corrected, made self-conscious or photographed against their wishes, they will feel that every time they look, however good the result. If the making was easy and kind, an ordinary image can become a favourite because of what it recalls.
When you photograph someone, pay as much attention to how the moment feels as to the frame. Keep it short, say what you like about how they look, and let a decent picture from a warm ten minutes beat a better one from a tense hour.
