REFLECTION
Confidence with tools is useful right up to the point where it is not. Plumbing, electrics, structural work and anything behind a wall have a threshold past which an amateur attempt converts a small job into a large one, and the threshold is usually crossed before you notice. Knowing your limit in advance is a skill of its own, quite separate from competence. The cheapest call is often the early one.
Before starting a repair, decide the point at which you will stop and phone someone. Write that boundary down while you are still calm and curious.
