The claim worth sharing is one you would still share with its important qualifications attached.

Claims get sharper as they travel. The finding held under particular conditions, the story had another side, the number was an estimate, and each retelling drops one more of those clauses because they slow the sentence down. What survives is more shareable and less true. A fair test is whether you would still pass it on with the qualifications attached.

Before repeating something striking, say it once with all its conditions included. If it stops being worth mentioning, you have just learned what was doing the work.
