The advice you give should include the advantage that made it possible for you to follow it.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Advice usually leaves out the conditions that made it work. Leaving the job, taking the risk, holding out for a better offer, moving cities: each of those rested on savings, a spare room, a willing partner, a passport, or a family that could absorb a bad year. With none of that named, the advice sounds like a matter of nerve, and whoever cannot follow it concludes the failing is theirs. Naming the advantage is what makes it honest.

When you tell somebody what worked for you, say what you had that made it possible. Then ask what they have, and adjust the suggestion to fit it.
