A possession can have served you well without needing to stay forever.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Gratitude for an object is often confused with obligation to it. The desk that got you through a hard year did its work, and keeping it out of loyalty asks it to go on doing a job that is finished. Nothing is taken back from the past when a thing leaves the present.

When you are stuck over something you no longer use, try thanking it plainly and letting it go. Take a photograph if the memory needs somewhere to live. The years it was useful stay yours whether or not it is still in the cupboard.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Are you keeping an object only because it once served you?
