The first version should test the idea before it tests your ability to impress people.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

First attempts serve one of two purposes, and only one of them is useful early. A version built to answer a question tells you something you did not know. A version built to impress mostly tells you how good you are at building impressive things. Polish is also expensive to abandon, so the more finished it looks, the harder it is to admit the idea underneath is wrong.

Whatever you are starting, write down the single question the first attempt should answer. Build only enough to answer it. Show it to someone while it is still rough enough to change.
