The local person giving directions is interrupting an ordinary day to improve yours.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

They were going somewhere before you stopped them. Directions cost real minutes, attention and often the effort of finding words in a language that is not theirs, and none of that is part of anybody’s job. Because the exchange resembles a service, it is easy to receive it as though it were owed. It was a small gift from someone with their own errands.

Ask briefly, listen properly, and thank the person before checking your phone against what they said. Do not argue with a local about their own streets. If the directions turn out to be wrong, remember what was offered was goodwill rather than accuracy.
