You can enjoy time apart without presenting it as an escape from each other.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Framing an evening alone as relief makes it about the other person. Solitude is an ordinary appetite, like wanting a different meal, and it does not need a reason drawn from what is wrong at home. When it gets presented as escape, the other person hears something about themselves in a plan that was never about them.
Say what you are going toward rather than what you are getting away from. A night to read, a walk on your own, an old friend you want to see. Encourage the same in return, and try not to treat their wish for quiet as a message.
What do you enjoy alone that you apologize for wanting?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
