A personal choice does not become public property because people find it surprising.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Surprise gets treated as permission. Somebody hears an unexpected choice about a body, a belief or a way of living, and the unfamiliarity feels like grounds for questions they would never ask otherwise. Curiosity is not an entitlement. A choice does not become everyone’s business by being unusual, and the person making it owes no explanation.

Answer only as much as you want to, and let a pleasant change of subject do the rest. When you are the curious one, ask yourself whether you would put the same question to someone whose choice looked conventional. If not, keep it to yourself and let them tell you if they want to.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which of your choices do you over explain to people who ask?
