A waiting room contains more futures than its appointment list can describe.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Everyone in the room is holding a version of their life that has not been decided yet. The list on the desk records names and times because that is what a list can hold; it has no column for the thing each person is bracing against or hoping for. Sitting among strangers in that state is one of the more private public experiences there is, and it explains why the atmosphere feels heavier than the furniture.
If you find yourself waiting somewhere like this, be gentle with your own attention. And if you are the one accompanying someone, your presence is the whole job.
When did you last wonder what a stranger beside you faced?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
