An old recording keeps the voice at an age the speaker has already left behind.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Recordings do not age with the people in them. A voice on tape stays exactly where it was, still holding the pitch and the phrasing of a particular year, while the person who made it has gone on changing or has gone altogether. That mismatch is what makes old audio land harder than photographs; a voice arrives in the room in a way an image does not. It can be a comfort and an ache at once, and both are allowed.
If there are voices you would miss, record one now while it is ordinary. A minute of someone talking about nothing much is enough.
