The video replayed repeatedly can turn one unusual moment into someone’s picture of an ordinary pattern.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Repetition manufactures typicality. A clip that exists because it was unusual gets watched a hundred times, and each viewing lays down another trace, until the rare event has the mental weight of a common one. Nobody consciously concludes that this happens all the time; the impression assembles itself from frequency of exposure rather than from any claim. Whole beliefs about crime, about other countries, about entire groups of people are built this way.

When something has been in front of you repeatedly, ask how often it actually occurs. Counting once is usually enough to loosen an impression that took no effort at all to form.
