The image left uncropped gives context a chance to complicate the attractive version.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Cropping is an argument, made silently. Trimming the frame to the beautiful part removes the queue, the scaffolding, the weather, the two people just outside who would explain what was actually going on. The result is not false in any provable way, and it is also not the situation. Everyone doing it is simply choosing the flattering rectangle, which is what makes the habit so hard to see in yourself.
Leave one thing uncropped this week: a photograph, a story about your week, a summary of how a project is going. Let the awkward edge stay in and see whether it costs you anything.
What do you crop out when presenting your life to others?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
