Scale is not a measure of how much a day mattered. A large party is one shape of celebration and it suits some people, while for others it is an evening of managing everybody else’s comfort while quietly waiting for it to end. Four people at a table can hold more of the actual year than forty could. The default assumption that bigger means better loved has caused a great many exhausting birthdays.
