Your values become real when following them costs something.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

A value that has never cost you anything has not been tested, so you do not yet know whether you hold it. Anyone can be generous with surplus or honest when the truth is convenient. The moment of payment is the moment the value becomes real rather than aspirational.

Look for the small bills as they come: the refund you were given in error, the credit you could take, the comment you could let stand. Pay one of them this week rather than waiting for a dramatic occasion. Character is mostly established at these prices, and the large tests are easier if the small ones have been passed.
