A remembered laugh can bring a person back more quickly than a portrait.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
A picture holds a face that has been arranged, however slightly, for the camera. A laugh is not arranged at all; it is timing, breath, the particular way a person let go. That is why it can return them so suddenly, and why hearing something like it in a stranger can stop you.
If you are missing someone, you may find them more easily in a sound than in a photograph. Let yourself go looking for it, in a recording, in a story someone tells, in the way they said one particular word. There is no wrong place to find a person again.
Whose laugh do you still hear when you think of them?
