An opinion becomes more useful when its owner can describe where it stops applying.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A view with no stated limits tells you very little, because it fits every case equally and so distinguishes nothing. Knowing where your own position stops applying is evidence that you understand the thing rather than merely hold the ground. It also makes you much easier to talk to, since it gives the other person something specific to engage with instead of a wall.

Take something you believe and say aloud where it would not apply: in which circumstances, for whom, at what scale. Ask the same of someone whose confidence you find hard to argue with. It is friendlier than it sounds and it moves conversations quickly.
