The person switching off the screen may be making space for something less readily supplied.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

A screen supplies something immediately, every time, without fail. That reliability is the difficulty, because certain things only appear in unsupplied time: the idea that comes out of boredom, the noticing, the restlessness that turns into doing something. Those arrive slowly and cannot compete with a source that never runs out. Switching it off is less about abstinence than about letting something slower get through.

Leave one gap unfilled this week and let it be dull. Twenty minutes in a queue, the walk, the last part of an evening. See what turns up when nothing is being handed to you.
