An opinion can be carefully formed and still be incomplete about someone else’s experience.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Care in forming a view protects you from sloppiness, not from missing information. You can read widely, think slowly, check your reasoning, and still be reasoning about a life you have not lived, where the important details never reached anything you read. That gap is not a flaw in your thinking. It is a limit on the material your thinking had available.

When your view concerns people whose circumstances differ from yours, hold it as provisional until one of them has told you where it is wrong. Asking directly, then not arguing with the answer, closes more of the distance than further reading will.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose experience is missing from a view you hold firmly?
