The person asking for an example may be trying to understand rather than preparing a trap.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Requests for specifics get heard as challenges, particularly by anyone who has been caught out before. But the commonest reason someone asks for an example is that the abstract version has not connected to anything they know, and they are looking for a foothold. Reading the question as hostile turns your answer into a defence, and the defence is what makes the exchange adversarial. The interpretation tends to create the situation it expects.

Next time a question feels like a test, answer the friendly version of it first. If it does turn out to be a trap, you have lost nothing but a concrete example.
