Principles should guide your ambition, not chase behind it trying to repair damage.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

There are two places principles can sit. In front, they shape what you go after and how, and much of the damage never happens. Behind, they arrive after the fact as apology, repair, and justification, and the cost is far higher for everyone including you. Ambition moves fast, so principles have to be established before it starts.

Before your next push toward something, decide what you will not do to get it, and write it down while nothing is at stake. That list is worth far more before the pursuit than after, when the pressure will supply excellent reasons for every exception.
