A familiar song can return the company before it returns the date.

Memory does not store an occasion the way a calendar does. A few bars of something you have not heard in years brings back the people first, who was standing where, and only afterwards, if at all, the year it happened. What you kept was the company, because that is what mattered at the time. The date was never the part being recorded.

Should a song do this to you, follow it rather than waving it off. Let the person it returns come fully to mind, and if they are still reachable, say so to them. If they are not, the arrival is still worth something.
