The form should collect the answer without requiring the person to disappear into the categories.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Categories are a convenience for whoever is counting, not a description of anyone’s life. A form that offers only the boxes it finds easy to process forces people to choose the nearest wrong answer, and what gets filed afterwards is that wrong answer rather than the person. Good design asks what it needs and leaves room for the parts that do not fit.

Anyone building or using forms can add somewhere for the answer that was not anticipated. A free line, an option to say more, a person to talk to. And when you read the results, remember the boxes were yours, not theirs.
