A good direction begins from where the lost person actually stands.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Directions given from your own position are not directions at all. Someone who is lost cannot use the landmarks you carry in your head; they need the next turn from where their feet are, in terms visible from there. Most unhelpful explaining has this shape, starting at the speaker’s understanding rather than the listener’s confusion. Meeting somebody where they stand is a practical skill before it is a kindness.

When you next explain something, begin by asking what they can see already. Build from that one step at a time and check as you go, rather than repeating your own position louder.
