The person practicing aloud is making uncertainty available for useful correction.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Rehearsing silently keeps the errors safe. Speaking a thing out loud, badly, in front of someone puts the shaky parts where they can be heard and fixed, which is uncomfortable precisely because it works. Most people avoid this and then meet the weak passage during the real thing, when nobody can help. Being audibly unfinished is a strategy rather than an embarrassment.

Before your next talk, interview or difficult conversation, say it aloud to one person you trust. Ask them to stop you at the part that did not land. Do the version that makes you wince now rather than later.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would you rehearse aloud if being wrong felt safer?

Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
