Opinions get treated as possessions rather than as tools, and possessions are defended rather than tested. That is why people will argue at length for a position they have never examined: the argument feels like protecting something of theirs. Investigation feels like risking it.
Pick a view you hold strongly and ask when you last checked it against the strongest case on the other side. Then go and read that case properly, with the aim of stating it well. You may end up holding the same view. What changes is that you will be holding it rather than guarding it.
Which of your opinions have you defended more than examined?
