The easiest thing to count can crowd out the thing worth noticing.

Measurement drifts towards whatever is convenient. Hours, clicks, steps and units get counted because they are countable, while the qualities that matter, whether anybody was helped, whether the work was any good, have no easy number and slowly stop being discussed. The metric then becomes the goal by default. What is measured takes attention from what was meant.
For something you track, ask what it was originally standing in for. Spend five minutes assessing that directly, in words rather than numbers. Keep the count if it helps, but do not let it do your thinking.
What do you track because it is easy rather than important?
