A workbench collects proof that good results rarely begin looking respectable.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Making things is untidy in a way finished work never shows. Offcuts, wrong attempts, tools out of place and half-solved problems cover the bench, while the object that eventually leaves the room carries none of that mess with it. People see the outcome and imagine a tidy process behind it. The disorder was never a sign of doing it badly; it was the doing.

If your own work in progress looks chaotic, treat that as normal rather than as evidence against you. Let somebody see the bench occasionally. Judge yourself by what leaves the room.
