The grand building may have been made possible by work its walls do not mention.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Buildings record the people who paid and rarely the people who carried. Names above the door belong to whoever commissioned the work, while the quarrying, hauling, cooking, and cleaning that made it possible leave no inscription. That absence is not an accident of record keeping. It reflects who was thought worth naming. Admiring the result and asking who built it are not opposed.

In the next impressive place you visit, ask who did the work rather than only who ordered it. The same question at your own workplace will usually turn up somebody whose contribution has gone unrecorded.
