The hand learning to draw must persuade the eye to stop naming and start noticing.

REFLECTION
Naming is a shortcut, and it gets in the way of seeing. Once the mind says eye, or chair, it stops looking and supplies a stored symbol, which is why beginners draw the idea of a thing rather than the thing. Progress comes from staying with the shapes long enough for the label to lose its grip. Looking is a skill, and it is largely the skill of not concluding too early.
Spend ten minutes drawing something you know well without letting yourself say its name. Try copying it upside down, which makes naming harder and seeing easier.
Where does naming something stop you from actually looking at it?
